Fayette/Coweta Business: Spa helps pampered pets relax

Judy Moye was tired of finding her golden retriever's hairballs all over the floor. It was time to find a groomer who could help with Cody's shedding problem.

Moye, of Fayetteville, discovered Beau Tye's Pet Spa and Collectibles in the Peachtree City-Tyrone area through an advertisement.

The two owners, John Robertson and Randy LaSante, explained to her that the shedding annoyance could probably be relieved by a process called the FURminator, which can reduce shedding 60 to 80 percent and lasts about six weeks. Moye was skeptical but decided to give it a shot.

"It's great. I haven't seen any hairballs since the treatment," she said. "I used to have a big trash can beside me where I'd put the dog hair after brushing him, and now I don't need the trash can."

Robertson and LaSante recently opened the business to pamper pooches, naming it after their two Maltese dogs, Beau and Tye.

They offer a variety of services, including aromatherapy, where dogs can relax and breathe the scent of lavender oil to reduce stress; a milk bath treatment for the coat; and a hydro-massage bath, in which a high-powered shower stimulates the skin.

There's even a ''Day at the Spa'' package for dogs 30 pounds and under, in which coddled canines can be dropped off at 7:30 a.m. and picked up at 6 p.m. During the day, they listen to soothing music and luxuriate in other spa treatments of the owner's choice.

Robertson said prices can range from $13 for a basic bath to $45 for a full grooming. "Some costs depend on the breed, size, temperament and condition of coat," he explained.

LaSante, who does the grooming, attended school to become a dog groomer and learned about the latest technology and equipment. Robertson attends to the administrative needs.

Another new customer, Judy Cleary, recently took her Maltese, Chip, to the pet spa and plans on making Chip a regular there.

"The first thing I liked was that you can see the dog being groomed, and I've never been able to do that," she said. "It's not behind closed doors, and I knew right away it wasn't all show."

LaSante and Robertson previously worked in the corporate world and grew tired of the travel involved. They also had difficulty getting appointments to have their dogs groomed.

"What started out as a joke and talk has turned into a dream," Robertson said. "We are having a lot more fun and a lot less stress."
